October 24, 2005It's official - I have shin splintsWell it took a while to find out, 2 doctors an xray and 2 physios. Seems it wasn't that straight forward. Kept it up in the air most of the weekend which helped reduce the swelling, but I won't be in the Auckland Marathon again this year. So, ice 4 times a day and keep it elevated, then start the exercise up again slowly. BUGGER! At least I know what it is now and am on the mend. Will have to look for a new event to aim for once the physio can give me a time line.

October 15, 2005A & E
So I went to the local A & E yesterday and saw a doctor who spent the last 18 months a civilian medic in the air force. He said you have shin splints, but it could also have an infection. If it gets worse over the next fwe days go to the hospital and get an xray. Also go to physio. When was that race? 2 weeks? Not looking good:(

October 13, 2005Arrrrrrrggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh!The Auckland Marathon is only a couple of weeks away and I've got a virus in a nerve running up my shin which feels like it is on fire. Had a massage yesterday, but it didn't make any difference. The doctor said if it is still like that next week he will give me a cortizone injection which will hopefully make it go away, but I wanted to train on the course tomorrow:-( Before you get all impressed, I'm only doing 10km, that is, if I can get rid of this nerve problem. At the moment when the pain killers wear off, I can only walk about 50 meters! Arrrrggggghhhhhhh!

October 9, 2005Been busyHaven't had time to post any pics for a while, life is pretty hectic at the moment. Entered a song competition on Friday night, got lots of nice comments, but didn't win, but that's ok. I've decided I want to get more serious about songwriting. I'm not a great singer, but I play a mean guitar. It's a catch 22 really. If I want people to hear my songs and hopefully perform them, they have to be heard. Some of the songs I can do myself, but some are hip hop and need a rapper and some are for a woman to sing. Through the competition I found a group of people who run a fortnightly songwriters clinic, but they said the numbers have been dropping off. The next one is supposed to happen next Sunday, so I'm hoping it will happen. It would be good to even just share ideas with other writers. I'm walking 10km in the Auckland Marathon at the end of the month. Doesn't seem like much, but I haven't done any distances for a long time. Started training and did 10km on the treadmill on saturday. One calf is a bit sore, but otherwise fine. This weekend if the horrible weather we are having calms down, I will walk the course on Saturday. Work's been flat out and a bit stressful running a major project where the project manager left me to it and went accross the Tasman to that big wasteland off the coast of New Zealand, aka Australia. Surviced and lots of lessons learned, but didn't want to go anywhere near the computer even on the weekend. That also means that the magazine article I was supposed to finish yesterday isn't done yet, so will have to do that tonight. Anyway, more pics to come soon. Ciao for now.

October 3, 2005I'm walking backwards to ChristmasCoincidences. This morning I read a story in the paper about Pamela Stephenson who had an epiphany after writing a book about Robert Louis Stephenson and his wife Fanny. She said that she saw Fanny's ghost one night. Then I read an article in a magazine about how her husband, commedian Billy Connolly was a big fan of the late Spike Milligan, father of the Goon Show and more. Apparently Milligan went to visit Connolly and struggled to make him laugh, so he went outside, stripped naked except for a false penis shaped nose, which was enough to get a wry chuckle from Connolly. Then I look out of my living room window and see a guy jogging down the road Backwards! Which capped the coincidences off nicely because Millagan once wrote a song called, you got it, "Im walking backwards to Christmas". 'Spooky eh possums.
